Sloth: The Walking Dead

Ok, so I’m a little behind on this one. People have been talking about AMC’s The Walking Dead for a while now, but zombies scare me, so I’ve been reluctant to watch the show, but I got curious the other night on Netflix and decided to give it a shot.

HOLY. CRAP.

BALLS.

What a great show.

Let me warn you: the pilot episode is scary. Not American Horror Story scary, but very suspenseful. I highly recommend watching the first few episodes in a row.

The show focuses on Rick Grimes, a sheriff who is shot on the job and wakes up in the hospital alone in a world that has been taken over by “walkers” (zombies!). He is finally reunited with his wife and son, along with other survivors, and they face crazy circumstances and try to survive in a world taken over by a dangerous virus.

I seriously watched the first two seasons in like two days.

No shame.

What I love about this show is that it really explores the moral dilemmas that truly would plague us if such an epidemic were to happen in our world. Now, I certainly don’t believe in zombies, but I do find the theory fascinating. What would you do to protect yourself and your family?

The characters in the group of survivors are relatable and very real. They are posed with moral choices at every twist and turn.

But what you will probably most remember is the GORE.

I do not love gory movies, but somehow it’s different when people are fighting zombies. If a zombie’s body gets ripped in half when survivors try to pull it out of a well, you really don’t care. But you should know, every episode is very very gory, so be prepared!

The lead actors are of course fabulous (Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies), but I also think it’s important to note the main child actor in the show, Chandler Riggs. That kid can act his butt off. What would your childhood have been like if you’d had to fight for your life every single day? Riggs does an incredible job showing a child’s point of view in a post-apocalyptic society, and I’ll be the
first to say it: He deserves and Emmy nomination! I don’t know how kid actors do it! This kid is fantastic.

Anyway, watch the show. You’ll get hooked. The end.

Sloth: New TV Obsession

As much as I try to deny it because it makes me sound lazy and kind of lame, I LOVE TV! It’s not that I sit around all day glued to it (at least, not every day), but when I get into a show, I’m hooked. I love TV shows because they’re like extra long movies! The best shows for me are ones like LOST that always have some danger and suspense, but I also love a good drama with strong female leads like The Good Wife. Some shows are so ridiculously addicting that I find myself getting sad when the episode’s over. This is so true of my new obsession: ABC’s new show Revenge!

Now, when I first heard about this show, I did not think I was going to like it at all. The story line seemed incredibly vague, and I wasn’t sure if Emily VanCamp would be strong enough to carry a whole series. I would never have even watched the show if I hadn’t been kind of bored one day and decided to watch it OnDemand, and seriously this show blew me out of the water. Emily VanCamp has really stepped up as a leading lady, and she is amazing as Emily Thorne, an incredibly intelligent, powerful young woman hell-bent on avenging her father’s wrongful conviction of a crime, and eventually his death. The show is also full of gorgeous men like Joshua Bowman, Nick Wechsler, and Connor Paolo.

Each week, Emily unleashes a new plan to destroy the lives of some insufferable Hampton Beach socialites. She’s helped by Nolan (played by Gabriel Mann), a bored little rich boy type who seems to love meddling in other people’s lives, and is the only person who knows Emily’s true identity.

The series starts with a dramatic opening, an engagement party that ends in the grooms death, and then takes the audience back in time to see how the characters got to that point.

It’s created and written by Mike Kelley, who also worked on shows like Providence (remember that awesome show?!) and the O.C.

Seriously, if you love suspense, drama, and revenge, you HAVE to watch this show! Best enjoyed with a mug brownie. Wednesdays 10/9c on ABC

Perfect for: people who are experiencing LOST withdrawals and aren’t fans of Terra Nova.

I swear, if this show gets cancelled I’m gonna write a very strongly worded letter!

Sloth: My favorite new shows!

It’s fall, so that means I have a full DVR loaded with all the new shows (plus my faves that have returned). But with all these new fall shows comes the inevitable: cancellation.

The Playboy Club, Free Agents, and How To Be a Gentleman have already bit the dust, and I really hope my new favorites don’t join the list! Here are some of my fave new shows this season:

1. Up All Night

I am so in love with this show! I am a huge fan of Christina Applegate, and I have really been missing her on TV since the cancellation of Samantha Who? and this show is totally filling the void! Will Arnett & Christina Applegate are such an awesome comedy duo and they totally capture the “new parents missing their old lives” thing really well. This show has a phenomenal cast, and great writing. They got picked up for a whole season, and I really hope it lasts for several more!

2. Terra Nova

Now, I really like this show. It combines a bunch of my favorite things: dinosaurs, precocious child protagonists, over-protective father figures, retired military leader who’s a hard-ass on the outside, but has a heart of gold… But I’m so scared it’s going to end after one season, like my favorite from last season, Flash Forward. I LOVED Flash Forward, but I may have been the only one who had a season pass on my Tivo. I hope I’m wrong, because this show is great!

3. Once Upon a Time

Now, I know this show hasn’t even aired yet, so I probably shouldn’t jump the gun, but it sort of reminds me of the mini-series The 10th Kingdom, which I LOVED. I have no idea what this show is about, but the trailer is intriguing. The show airs Oct. 23rd, and I’ll definitely be watching….don’t disappoint me, ABC!!

4. New Girl

I LOVE Zooey Deschanel, and I love her totally weirdo character in this show! I feel like if I met Jess in real life, we’d be friends. I love the fresh, original storylines and clever writing. Also, the males in the cast are pretty great too! If you haven’t watched New Girl yet, go online and watch the pilot. You’ll love it too!

5. Pan Am

These girls are FAB! It makes me wish flying on airplanes was still so glamorous, and not an arduous task where you try not to gag while being shoved into a tin can with a bunch of sweaty strangers. It’s got the Mad Men-esque glamour quality, only instead of focusing on the men, this show really presents the new era of women who craved independence and adventure. You go, girl!
